The Mare Serenitatis Circumlunar Corporate Republic1 is one waypoint in the greater circumlunar.space universe. The Republic and its sister sites the Zaibatsu and Soviet are ideologically decriminalized worlds that offer text-based asylum to those fleeing the commercialisation, bloat and surveillance of the modern web.
The Republic offers 500MB of free gopher, static web and gemini hosting to anyone who wants it for any non-commercial purpose. Content is managed via sftp or shell. For further details, including instructions on how to request asylum, please visit republic.circumlunar.space via gopher, or via the web
Gopher is an internet protocol predating HTTP, which simply serves files from text-based menus. It is most commonly used to serve plain text content. You can say a lot in 500MB of text! Your content will load quickly and be easily accessible to the visually impaired and people using old, slow computers and networks. The protocol does not support cookies, user agents, referer strings or any analogues of these, so there is almost no scope for tracking.
Gemini is a simple, encrypted internet protocol that is meant to sit somewhere between gopher and the web in terms of complexity, while preserving the anti-tracking features of gopher. It was created by Solderpunk, the founder of the first Circumlunar Colony, the Zaibatsu.
Modern web browsers do not support either gopher or gemini. There are numerous web-to-gopher and web-to-gemini proxies available, but we discourage their use with the recent onslaught of AI crawlers. The best way to explore is with some native clients.
The hostnames and themes of the circumlunar.space universe are based on the novel Schismatrix by Bruce Sterling, you can read a brief backstory here.↩︎︎
